Race one featured the first Iowa consolation race on the card at What Cheer on Saturday (9/18), with two-year-old trotting fillies taking the track.  Secretive Kate (Jason Telfer) left quickly from the two-hole.  Cutting the mile in 31, 1:02.3 and 1:33.3, Secretive Kate made it no secret that she was looking for a win.  With a last quarter of  32.1, Secretive Kate picked up her first win for owners John Saner and Jason Telfer, trotting in 2:05.4.

Two-year-old trotting colts/geldings were up next in race two.  With a burst of speed, Mr Fedderson (Mark Mintun) trotted from the gate to take the lead.  As Mr Fedderson set the fractions of 29.3, 1:00 and 1;31 flat, Princeofthefield (Adam Hauser) sat patiently in the pocket.  Still up by three at the top of the stretch, it was a duel down the lane.  Crossing the wire, ahead by half a length, Princeofthefield showed that he was the best of the field, winning in 2:03, a new lifetime mark.

Freshmen pacing fillies lined up for race three.  With James Gould in the bike, Lil Char cruised from the rail, leading the rest at the quarter.  But Duane Roland had other ideas, driving Lulu Hoop up to take over as horses raced past the half.  Still up at the three-quarter-pole, Lulu Hoop gave up the lead as Lil Char charged to the front as they rounded the last turn.  Pacing home in 30.4, Lil Char put away the competition, winning in 2:03.2.

Hankscoltfortyfive (Duane Roland) shot for the lead at the start of race four, two-year-old pacing colts/geldings.  Leading the field around the track in 29.4, 1:02.3 and 1:32.2, Hankscolkfortyfive relinquished the lead to a hard charging Shotguninthehotsun (Cory Larson), as they reached the top of the stretch.  Firing down the lane, it was all Shotguninthehotsun, capturing the win in 2:02.1, a first lifetime win for the Marced Card gelding.

Three-year-old trotting fillies looked to compete in race five. With the rail assignment, Final Quote (Lorenza Gooch) trotted to the quarter in 31.1.  Still up at the half in 1:02.1, she led the fillies to the three-quarters in 1:33 flat.  As the trotting fillies turned for home, it was a battle for the wire.  With a final push across the line, SB Early Edition (Will Roland) returned victorious to the winner’s circle, mile in 2:04.2, a new lifetime mark.

Gary Liles and L-T Turbo rocketed out of the gate for the lead in race six, three-year-old trotting colts/geldings, with DP Super Special (Elvin Zimmerman) sitting second.  Not satisfied to follow the leader, DP Super Special was parked to the three-quarter-pole, finally taking command as they reached the top of the stretch.  Leading by two lengths, DP Super Special trotted for the win in 2:04 flat for Aimes Racing.

Next on the card, three-year-old pacing fillies looked to compete in race seven.  With a yee-haw, Starstruck Cowgirl (Adam Hauser) paced out of the starting gate for the lead.  Pacing the mile in 30.1, 1:00.3, Starstruck Cowgirl led the field to the three-quarters in 1:30.2.  But Always Choose Chip (Duane Roland) had been tracking the leader and made a bold move to gain the lead as they turned down the lane.  Holding off all challengers, Always Choose Chip paced the last quarter in a blistering 29.2, for her second win in a row and a new lifetime mark of 1:59.4, the fastest mile of the day.

The last consolation race was contested in race eight for three-year-old pacing colts/geldings.  Fast Talking Ted (Chad Svendsen) talked a big game as he sprinted for the lead from the rail.  With the fractions in 29, 59 and 1:29.2, Fast Talking Ted still maintained control of the race, up by over a length on the field.  As horses raced for the finish line, Will Roland and Gumbolaya stirred up the victory, crossing the line in 2:00.2, picking up a new lifetime mark.

Iowa harness racing resumes with the Championship races to be held on Sunday (9/19) at What Cheer.  Post time is set for 12:30pm CDT.
