What Cheer, IA — Sixteen fields of Iowa-sired 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds competed in the second of three 2019 Iowa Sires Stakes meets at the Keokuk County Fairgrounds on Saturday (June 29).  Six contenders remain undefeated in Iowa-sired company.

All freshman trots went to repeat winners.  After a decisive win in the first Iowa Sires Stakes meet two weeks ago, Battle Queen returned for another first place finish in 2:07.3, the fastest 2-year-old trot of the day. Owned, trained and driven by Gary Liles, the 2-year-old daughter of Yadi sat tight in second until the half when she took command, then powered home in a speedy 30.3 last quarter.

Scoreoneforme was the heavy favorite in the first division of 2-year-old trotting colts after coming off an impressive 75-length victory two weeks ago.  Sired by Man of Broadway, a son of Broadway Hall, and out of the Conway Hall mare Perfect Score, Scoreoneforme went wire-to-wire in 2:09.4 with trainer/driver Rick Huffman in the bike.  Scoreoneforme is owned by Huffman and Keith Wilson.

The second division of freshman trotting colts went to SV Tymal’s Image from the Aimes Racing stable.  Driver Samuel Zimmerman sat in second until the head of the stretch when he tipped out in a crowd-pleasing stretch run to capture the win in 2:12.  SV Tymal’s Image is by Tymal Templar, a son of Angus Hall. He is trained by Elvin Zimmerman.

In her second start Iowa this season, Selma O’Brien put another tally in the win column for round two of the Iowa Sires Stakes.  By the late Hot Pans and out of the Presidential Ball mare Kelly Graham, the big 3-year-old pacing filly powered to the lead by the quarter and led the field to the finish in a 2:01.4 performance for trainer/driver Mark Mintun.  Selma O’Brien is owned by Mintun, Stephanie Gould, Joseph Kilburg, and Big Show Racing Stable.

In the second division of 3-year-old pacing fillies, 2018 Iowa Sires Stakes Champion Heavy Handed Hanna paired with driver Will Roland for another Iowa Sires Stakes win in a 2:01 mile, matching her lifetime mark.   Trained by Curtis Carey, the daughter of Millionaire Cam made her move before the 3/4 pole and never slowed down, sweeping around the final turn and cruising home for the win. Heavy Handed Hanna is owned by Jesse Delong, Lindsay Rueckert and Jeff Carey.

Starting from the back tier was no obstacle for 2018 Champion Ricky Be Sharp.  Not only did he collect another win, but he also shaved two seconds off his personal best, crossing the wire in 2:02.3 for the Lorenza Gooch Stable.  By the late American Native and the Valley Victor mare Cosmetize, Ricky Be Sharp remains undefeated in Iowa-sired company.

The final Iowa Sires Stakes meet will be at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds on August 24.  Iowa-Registered racing also resumes at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds on July 4 at 5:00pm with fireworks to follow.
