Fillies shine at Humboldt Fair

On Sunday (7/3) sophomore harness racing trotters and pacers competed in multiple divisions of the Glenn & Lorraine Jenson Memorial Trot and the Mark & Ethel Insko Memorial Pace at Humboldt, IA, with fillies taking the prize.
Secretive Kate (Macduffie) and driver Jason Telfer was looking for her second win of the season when she took to the track in race seven, the fourth division of the Glenn & Lorraine Jenson Memorial Trot.
Leaving from the rail, Secretive Kate quickly grabbed the lead and didn’t look back. Quarters in 31.1, 1:03.4 and 1:35.4, Secretive Kate was still up by over a length as she eyed the finish line. With her last quarter in 30 flat, Secretive Kate captured the win and blanket, trotting the fastest division in 2:05.4 for owners John Saner and Jason Telfer.
Race eight featured the fourth division of the Mark & Ethel Insko Memorial Pace. Lil Char (In Over My Head) and driver James Gould left smartly from the three-hole to go straight to the top in 30.0. Letting Windy Island (Elvin Zimmerman) take over, Lil Char sat in the pocket until past the half.
Pulling to the outside, Lil Char gained ground to re-capture the lead as they turned for home. As the wire approached, Lil Char was up on the field by five lengths. Greeted by owners, Stephanie Gould, James Gould and Justin Gould, in the winner’s circle, Lil Char was awarded the blanket for the fastest pacing division, her race time in 2:00
Royal Roland also picked up a driving triple, with Hangman McGee (Matty Mcgee) in race two, DP Cantabs Girl (Mr Cantab) in race three and Fox River Luke (Lukas Hall) in race five. Driver/Trainer Brandon Jenson grabbed a driving double from his stable, with T A Woody Azzzz (Tamarind) in race nine and Flying Calchips (Lukas Hall) in race eleven.

On Monday (7/4), two-year olds competed for bragging rights in divisions of the Orville Anderson Memorial Trot and Larry Frakes Memorial Pace, with the winner of the fastest division taking home the prize.
Will Roland teamed up with trainer Curtis Carey to see if they could keep Chicken N Dice’s winning streak alive in race two, the first division of the Larry Frakes Memorial Pace.
As the gate folded, Chicken N Dice (Millionaire Cam) left from post-position three to take command. Cutting the mile in 29.0, 59.2 and 1:31.3, Chicken N Dice was all alone at the top of the stretch. With a new lifetime mark of 2:02.1, Chicken N Dice scored the fastest division to secure the title for owners Thomas Carey and Jesse De Long.
Teaming up again, Roland and Carey sent She Pirate (Spectator K) to the track in race ten, the sixth division of the Orville Anderson Memorial Trot. With a brush from the four-hole, She Pirate trotted up to take the lead.
The first quarter in 33.0, half in 1:05.0 and to the three-quarters in 1:37.0, She Pirate still held the lead by two lengths. With a strong last quarter in 29.4, She Pirate commandeered the fastest division in 2:06.4 and the blanket for owner Rian Sherman.
Roland went on to pick up a driving triple in race thirteen, with Carey trained Waterloo Lucy (Odds On Equuleus).
Iowa harness racing resumes for a three-day event at What Cheer, Friday (7-8), Saturday (7-9) and Sunday (7-10). Post time for all three days will be 12:30pm CST. Races will also be broadcast live on the Iowa Harness Racing YouTube channel.
